Voda (German water ) is a Slovenian-language pop song with which the singer Ana Soklič won the show Evrovizijska Melodija 2020 . She wrote it with Bojan Simončič and Žiga Pirnat and should take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam with the song .

background

At the end of December 2019 it was announced that Soklič would participate in the preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest, Evrovizijska Melodija. At the beginning of February 2020, an excerpt from her title Voda was presented to the public on YouTube. The preliminary decision took place on February 22nd, 2020. Soklič qualified from the first round for the subsequent superfinal. There she was able to prevail against her competitor Lina Kuduzović with 5,035 against 4,369 phone calls and thus won the preliminary decision. The singer's acceptance speech, in which she professed Jesus Christ , caused a sensation in social networks and the press.

At the beginning of March it was announced that the title would be revised. The final version was released on March 20th.

Music and lyrics

The title is characterized by the strong orchestral sound. Soklič wrote it together with Bojan Simončič, and Žiga Pirnat. The latter produced the song and wrote the arrangement. Željko Mladenović was responsible for the mix . The mastering was carried out by Luka Radojlović. The recordings of the new version were made by the Budapest Arts Orchestra. The conductor was Peter Pejtsik.

According to the interpreter, the water themed in the song symbolizes the negative that needs to be overcome. She missed a patriotic spirit in Slovenia and the belief that dreams could come true. Against this background, she looked for words that should illustrate that something could always come true. The water is intended as a metaphor . Soklič asks the audience to interpret the song in their own way.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Slovenia should have performed this song in the first semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.

publication

The version with which the interpreter had started the preliminary decision was initially not released commercially and was heard in full for the first time on the show. The revised song was released on March 20, 2020 with a lyrics video that Den Baruca produced.

On May 14th, in addition to the original EMA version, an English recording entitled "Water" was released.
