The 22nd Evrovizijska Melodija (EMA) (or EMA Evrovizija ) was the Slovenian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam ( Netherlands ) and took place on February 22nd, 2020. Ana Soklič won with her song Voda .
format
concept
On August 1, 2019, the public service broadcaster Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTV SLO) published the continuation of Evrovizijska Melodija. The broadcaster presented an innovation in the preliminary decision concept. The broadcaster organized a program called EMA Freš in which two wildcards for the final were given to previously unknown artists. The comedian Klemen Slakonja will moderate the show.
Choice of contribution
From August 1, 2019 to November 18, 2019, contributions could be submitted to RTV SLO. This applied to artists who had already published three songs by February 1, 2020. The performers and their songs released on December 20, 2019.
A three-person jury, consisting of the singer Raiven, the head of the ZKP RTVS publishing house, Mojca Menart, and the music editor in charge of the VAL 202 broadcaster, Jernej Vene, selected ten performers from all 74 entries.
Attendees
On December 20, 2019 at 3 p.m. ( CET ) RTV SLO presented ten of the total of 12 performers in the preliminary round. The remaining two candidates, Saška and Parvani Violet, were determined by EMA Freš. The singer Tinkara Kovač will return to the competition after 2014. At that time she won the preliminary round and represented Slovenia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen ( Denmark ). The singer Lina Kuduzović represented Slovenia at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2015 . There she took third place and got the best result to date for Slovenia in a song contest edition.
final
The final of Evrovizijska Melodija 2020 took place on February 22, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. ( CET ). It consisted of two rounds. In the first round, all 12 participants presented their songs. A three-person jury consisting of Maja Keuc , Darja Švajger and Nuša Derenda then decided that Ana Soklič and Lina Kuduzović had qualified for the superfinal. There the two interpreters appeared again. In the superfinal, in which only the audience voted, prevailed with almost 54 percent of the audience votes cast. The comedian Klemen Slakonja hosted the show.

Under the title EMA Freš , RTV SLO organized an internet preliminary round for the first time in which young performers had the opportunity to get a starting place at EMA 2020. Potential candidates had to submit a one-minute application video. The preliminary decision is aimed at under 26-year-olds who have so far not published more than three songs. The closing date for entries was September 19, 2019. RTV SLO will publish the submitted entries from November 4, 2019 on its website and the broadcaster's social media channels, so that viewers can choose a winner within five weeks.
The selection process continued over several rounds and lasted around five weeks. Every week from Monday to Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. ( CET ), a total of six performers and their songs were presented, i.e. two every day. They competed against each other in duels and the audience decided on the winner of the three duels. The winners qualified for a weekly final on Friday, in which the audience and a jury could choose two winners. Thus six performers qualified for the final in the first three weeks of the EMA Freš. The 12 performers who have not yet qualified for the final competed against each other in a second, two-week round using the same procedure as in the first round. Thus, four more performers qualified for the final, so that a total of ten performers competed in the final. The two winners of the final received a wildcard for EMA 2020.
On October 21, 2019 RTV SLO presented the participants and their songs.
