The bird sanctuary Bertoldsheim reservoir is located in the Danube in the district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen in the Bavarian administrative district of Upper Bavaria.

The Bertoldsheim reservoir is located on the Danube south of Bertoldsheim in the market town of Rennertshofen . It has a water surface of around 109 hectares and a maximum depth of 10 m. On the municipal area of Rennertshofen it covers a total area of 100 hectares. The notification as a protected area as part of the Ramsar area " Lech-Donau-Winkel " took place in 1989, later a notification came in the context of the European bird sanctuary "Donauauen between Lech estuary and Ingolstadt" and thus the simultaneous protection within the framework of the European network " Natura2000 ".

The reservoir and the surrounding areas are also part of the FFH area identification number 7232-301 "Danube with Jura slopes between Leitheim and Neuburg" and the SPA area 7231-471 "Donauauen between the mouth of the Lech and Ingolstadt". Furthermore, the bird sanctuary Bertoldsheimer reservoir is also part of the Ramsar area “Lech-Donau-Winkel” and is therefore also subject to the European Natura 2000 species protection program . There is moderate use for leisure activities such as sailing and fishing, and there is also a small boat lock for canoeists. All activities are subject to strict requirements such as distance requirements from the bird islands and driving bans outside the Danube channel between November 15 and March 15.

The bird sanctuary is characterized by several artificially raised bird islands - entry ban - and extensive shallow water zones, in which some huge tree trunks and some branches are distributed as a seating and resting aid for birds.

The area, together with the Feldheimer Reservoir bird sanctuary, is an important resting and wintering area for Nordic migratory birds in Europe and a breeding and moulting area for water birds.

To the south of the reservoir, which is sealed by dams, there is a large oxbow lake and bank area with secondary alluvial forest developments and natural alluvial forest remnants, the " Donaualtwasser Schnödhof (nature reserve) " is outstanding in this area .
