Location of the Feldheim reservoir at the confluence of the Lech and the Danube

The nature reserve Vogelfreistätte Feldheim reservoir is located in the Bavarian administrative region of Swabia, in the district of Donau-Ries just before the mouth of the Lech into the Danube. On the municipal areas of Niederschönenfeld and the town of Rain am Lech , it covers a total area of 100 hectares. It was placed under protection on May 18, 1982

The nature reserve is also part of the FFH area identification number 7232-301 Danube with Jura slopes between Leitheim and Neuburg and the SPA area 7231-471 Donauauen between the mouth of the Lech and Ingolstadt . The Feldheim reservoir is also part of the Ramsar area " Lech-Donau-Winkel " and is therefore also subject to the European Natura 2000 species protection program . There are strict entry bans at certain times of the year.

The bird sanctuary was created from a reservoir of the Lech approx. 1.5 km before its confluence with the Danube. The southern border is formed by the Lechbrücke on Bundesstrasse 16 Donauwörth-Neuburg, there is a parking lot with year-round access to the eastern dam path along the reservoir. The entire length of the western dam path along the quiet zone for water birds is prohibited from being accessed during the protection period from October to April. On both sides of the reservoir, which is sealed by dams, there is a large oxbow lake and bank area with secondary riparian forest developments. Generous island areas have been left in the reservoir, which provide nesting birds with the necessary relaxation space. In addition, large areas as shallow water zones are partly covered with tree trunks and seating aids. The reservoir is used by whooper swans and other migratory birds as winter quarters. Among the breeding birds counts as the great crested grebe .

The area, together with the Bertoldsheim reservoir, is an important resting and wintering area for Nordic migratory birds in Europe and a breeding and moulting area for water birds. It is part of the Lech-Donau-Winkel wetland area, which was internationally significant according to the Ramsar Convention, and is part of the FFH area in connection with the nearby Donaualtwasser nature reserve near Leitheim in the west and the Donaualtwasser Schnödhof nature reserve in the east, south of the Bertoldsheim bird sanctuary .
