Mertinger hell
The Mertinger Hölle , also called Mertinger Höll, is a nature reserve on the corridor of the municipality of Mertingen in the district of Donau-Ries , administrative district of Swabia in Bavaria . It covers an area of around 143 hectares . It was placed under protection on May 15, 1984. At the same time, the Mertinger Höll with an area of 858 hectares is subject to the guidelines of FFH area 7330-301 “Mertinger Hölle and surrounding wetlands” and the SPA area 7330-471 “Meadow breeder habitat Swabian Donauried” Natura 2000 .

The area forms a large remainder of the Donauried which formerly reached here . Centuries ago there was a large fen area and then peat mining . Modern reforestation and drainage attempts, partly on former peat extraction areas, show a residual forest today, as well as partly large-scale encroachment . Mainly, the Mertinger Höll is characterized by wide, flat wet meadows and reed beds . It is a valuable habitat for rare and sometimes highly endangered plants and for a large number of meadow-breeding bird species. The Bund Naturschutz in Bayern, Kreisgruppe Donau-Ries, has been committed to sustainable protection of the areas for years by purchasing partial areas and supporting maintenance measures, among other things. a. with keeping the habitats of the lapwing , corncrake or curlew by removing bushes and clearing hedges.
According to the government of Swabia, the nature reserve is leased for the long term by the Donau-Ries district in order to be able to systematically tackle the complex maintenance of the area - site regeneration, de-bushing and the design of habitats. The owner of the nature reserve is a foundation administered by the city of Augsburg , which goes back to the industrialist Friedrich Gustav Firnhaber ; the hell was once his hunting ground.
