Friedrich August Firnhaber

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich August Firnhaber (born April 15, 1823 in Nuremberg , † March 18, 1887 Augsburg ) was a German entrepreneur and councilor .

Firnhaber took over the management of the Augsburg worsted spinning mill in 1867 as the successor to his uncle Johann Anton Friedrich Merz . Together with his wife Maria Magdalena, née zuner, Firnhaber was committed to helping needy young Augsburgers and factory workers who were unable to work.

After his death, his wife founded the "Friedrich Firnhabersche Foundation". After her death, this foundation passed to the city of Augsburg and with it the 189 hectares of alluvial forest in the north of Augsburg, which he had bought for hunting from the state forest administration in 1883. This area was then released for settlement by the city after a few years and was named " Firnhaberau " after its former owner . The foundation, which goes back to Firnhaber, is also the owner of the Mertinger Hölle nature reserve , which has been leased to the Donau-Ries district on a long-term basis .
