Alveolitis exogenous - allergic cause - is referred to as bird keeper's lung (also: bird breeder's lung or pigeon fancier disease ) . It can occur in an acute or insidious, chronic form.
Symptoms
The typical symptoms of pneumonia appear 4–12 hours after contact with the allergen , such as fever , difficulty breathing , coughing with or without sputum and an accelerated pulse . The symptoms subside within a few days. The creeping-chronic course is characterized by a general, flu-like feeling of illness, such as aching limbs , weight loss and decreasing resilience.
root cause
The allergens that cause this disease are animal proteins found in the dust and droppings of birds. Feathers in down textiles are also possible. These allergens lead to an inflammatory reaction of the lung tissue caused by a type III immune complex reaction .
consequences
The symptoms usually subside within a few days. Continuous contact with allergens can severely damage or destroy the lung tissue. The lung function can be permanently restricted. In individual cases, the heart is also stressed.
therapy
The allergen should be avoided completely. In severe cases, treatment with glucocorticoids is initiated. The bird keeper's lung is a reportable occupational disease .
