etymology
Pechofen is a compound with the final words ahd. Peh , beh and mhd. Bech , pech . A strongly inflected neuter: "Bad luck, hellfire"; borrowed from lat. pix . The name of the field refers to a kiln-like field stove in which raw wood was boiled to pitch.
The evidence for Pechbusch presumably also relates to a pitch furnace.
