OMR Volker Schliack (born July 21, 1921 ) is a German doctor and former university professor. He is considered a pioneer and trailblazer in diabetology in the GDR .

Life

After studying human medicine, Schliack began his training in diabetology with Gerhardt Katsch . In 1950 he received his doctorate with a widely recognized work, in which he found that the incidence of diabetes was up to ten times more common than previously assumed, for "Dr. sc med." As a result, Schliack became particularly involved in the early detection and diagnosis of diabetes. To this end, he introduced the standardized oral glucose tolerance test that is still used today, with the intake of 75 g of glucose. In 1955, Schliack conducted series examinations in West Germany to identify the incidence of diabetes.

In 1958, Schliack was appointed director of the Central Office for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases in Berlin, where he organized diabetological care for the East Berlin population. To this end, he pursued a strictly interdisciplinary approach and created a contact point in each district that was connected to the central office. In addition, he ran a large clinic for diabetes and metabolic diseases, which had a night clinic, which was revolutionary at the time.

Schliack was a lecturer for the subject of diabetology at the Charité Berlin. He was internationally recognized as a professional in the field of diabetology.

In 1986 Schliack retired.
