Volkshaus (Leverkusen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Volkshaus in Leverkusen emerged from the tradition of trade union houses and was built in 1930 on their own initiative by members of the Proletarian Culture Cartel, which is close to the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) . The Proletarian Culture Cartel, like the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (Workers' Welfare Association) , which was closely related to the SPD , had been awarded a site by the then city of Wiesdorf for the establishment of its own event venue. The Karl-Liebknecht-Schule , the central educational facility of the DKP, has been located in the Volkshaus since 1977 .

history

In the mid-1920s, a workers 'sports and culture cartel was founded, which was called Kulturkartell Wiesdorf eGmbH and saw itself as an umbrella organization for eleven workers' organizations. The proletarian cultural cartel was mainly supported by the KPD. After the beginning of the NSDAP's reign of terror in late January 1933, the Volkshaus was occupied by the Nazis on February 28, 1933. The estimated value of the "residential and farm building, 2-story, with a cellar is given as 20,000 RM".

The Nazis set up shop in the Volkshaus. For a short time the house was called "Horst-Wessel-Haus" , then it was called "Hermann-Göring-Heim" . This is where the SA Standard 53 driving school found its accommodation. Meanwhile, the "Kulturkartell" was dissolved as "subversive" on July 2, 1933 by order of the district administrator in Opladen at the instigation of the State Police Office in Düsseldorf and its assets (760 RM) were made available to the state treasury. Many members of the culture cartel, like other anti-Nazis, were persecuted by the Nazis over the next twelve years.

In 1977, the Karl Liebknecht School, the central party school of the DKP, moved from Essen to Leverkusen. The Volkshaus was converted for this purpose, and bedrooms and seminar rooms were set up. Around forty weekly courses were held each year for the next ten years.
