Jan Mayensfield is a Norwegian military airfield on Jan Mayen in the North Atlantic .

History and description

The airfield is located northeast of Olonkinbyen , the only remaining residential area on the island. The runway is 1.5 km (4,921 ft) long and 30 m wide and has no paved runway or infrastructure. Adverse weather conditions, among other things, by the "Kármán Wind" said lee waves around the lying near volcanic Beerberg partially impede the operation of the air traffic.

In 1958, NATO and the Norwegian forces began building a military outpost and airfield on the outskirts of Olonkinbyen. The airfield was put into operation in August 1960; the first plane landed on September 17, 1960 and was a Catalina of the Norwegian Air Force . The first civil aircraft, a Douglas DC-4 from Braathens SAFE , landed on October 29, 1961.

The airfield is served eight times a year by the Norwegian Air Force on a regular basis with Lockheed C-130 machines to supply the weather station . To enter the island, which can only be reached by taking a flight with the Norwegian Air Force or is visited by cruisers by the hour, a permit with expedition equipment , appropriate food and SAR mountain insurance is required.
