The former municipal kitchen in Linz has housed the Upper Austria Architecture Forum and the MAERZ gallery since 2003 . The building is a historical monument.

history

After the establishment of a people's kitchen association in 1887, a people's kitchen was run in a previous building. In 1920 the administration of the Volksküche was taken over by the City of Linz, which built a new building in 1926 according to the plans of the City Planning Director Curt Kühne . In 1970 its use as a people's kitchen was discontinued. In 2002 the building was converted and expanded into a house for exhibitions.

architecture

The house was planned based on German brick Gothic, using both Gothic forms and elements of Expressionism . The floor plan is hook-shaped, two-story towards Prunnerstraße and a three-story transverse wing with a striking stepped gable towards Lederergasse . The gable was underlined by further steps in the building and designed to be exciting down to the last detail. The entrance portal has a pointed arch, the window groups are designed differently. An ornamental orientalizing field was worked into the gable field with exposed bricks. On the ground floor, barred windows were provided with an expressive frame. In the corner area is a relief by Gustav Muhrer from 1926 and a decoratively shaped coat of arms of the city of Linz.

Conversion, expansion and restoration

The building was re-adapted in 2002 according to plans by the architect Bernhard Rosensteiner. Interior walls were removed and a new staircase was built. The building technology was renewed. This was financed by the City of Linz together with the Province of Upper Austria with 280,500 and 536,000 euros respectively. During the external restoration, the original colored natural plaster was preserved in terms of its structure and appearance through cleaning processes and adapted plaster supplements.

In 2009, on the occasion of the European Capital of Culture Linz 09 , it also housed a room in the Pixelhotel - this was unmistakable thanks to the originally laid Eternit panels, which were complemented by the light paintings of the incident light rays.
