Professor Peter Pokrowsky from Zweibrücken from the Institute for Microsystem Technology (IMST) had the idea of ​​setting up an observatory on campus. Pokrowsky founded the Natural Science Association in Zweibrücken in 1999, and the observatory opened in 2002.

In August 2018, the building in the design of the robot was R2-D2 from Star Wars - films deleted. In March 2019, the R2-D2 observatory received a lot of media attention after actor Mark Hamill , who plays Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films , tweeted about the observatory.

Instruments

The main instrument of the observatory is a reflecting telescope of the type Schmidt-Cassegrain mm with a mirror diameter of 35.6 cm (14 inches) and a focal length of the 3910th Various eyepieces with focal lengths of 10–40 mm and magnifications from 98x to 391x are used on this telescope.

A SolarMax telescope from Coronado with an aperture of 4 cm and a focal length of 40 cm is available for observing the sun. The associated eyepieces allow a magnification of 16x to 50x.

When the sky is clear, the observatory is open to visitors on Friday evenings from 8 p.m. as well as for special astronomical events and by appointment.
