Lonely outpost - the "Volunteer Point."

Volunteer Point is a headland on the east coast of East Falkland , north of the capital Stanley . It is one of the breeding grounds for king penguins ; and elephant seals are found here. At the entrance to the island there is a house and a few storage sheds - volunteer apartments, from which the place name was derived.

Strategic importance in the Falklands War

During the Falklands War , the Argentines assumed the British would land at this point as it was far enough away from the Argentine military airfields as well as a retreat in the recapture of the capital Stanley. In fact, however, the British ended up in San Carlos Water .
