Volzem stones
The Volzemer Steine (also referred to as “champagne stones” on an old geological map of Dobel) are block heaps between the Dreimarkstein and Dobel . Until they were designated a natural monument in 1949, the local population used the rocks as a quarry.
The Große Volzemer Stein (mostly simply called Volzemer Stein ) is located directly on the Westweg . It is about 100 meters wide and up to 10 meters high. The Kleine Volzemer Stein is a little off the path in the forest.
The rock formation was created by the weathering of the layered red sandstone, from which softer layers of rock were washed out. Water penetrated cracks and blasted off boulders.
Millstones and fountain troughs were made from the resistant red sandstone .
