From perplexed and lionshearted - An entertaining but useful story of the English Middle Ages is a nonfiction book by the German author Rebecca Gablé published by Ehrenwirth-Verlag in 2008 . It is about the medieval history of England . It is Gablé's only non-fiction book so far.

The book describes English history from AD 450 to 1485. It begins with the withdrawal of Roman troops around 450 and ends in 1485 with the end of the Wars of the Roses . The book is divided into six chapters:

  • What are we talking about here? - The first chapter deals with the definition and the period of the English Middle Ages, which Gablé defines as follows: “(...) also in the division of historical epochs our neighbors on the island go their own way and say: The Middle Ages lasted for us almost exactly 450 to almost exactly 1485. That is not an undisputed opinion, but it is a widespread opinion, and I find it at least suitable ”.
  • 450–1066: The Anglo-Saxons - The 2nd chapter deals with the time of the Anglo-Saxons from the departure of the Romans to the conquest of England by the Normans.
  • 1066–1154: The Normans - Chapter 3 describes the conquest by the Normans under William the Conqueror and the associated cultural changes in England.
  • 1154–1399: The Plantagenet - Chapter 4 begins with the coronation of Henry II and ends in 1399.
  • 1399–1461: The Lancaster - The 5th chapter deals with the royal rule of the House of Lancaster , which began in 1461 with the deposition of Henry VI. ends.

The book contains a list of all English kings from 871 to 1509, as well as a chronological table of the English Middle Ages.
