Vorarlberg state flag
The Vorarlberg state flag is split in two horizontally, the upper stripe is red, the lower one white (heraldic: silver), its proportions are 2: 3.
Appearance
The colors of the flag come from the Vorarlberg state coat of arms and are standardized by Article six paragraph two of the Vorarlberg state constitution as follows: "The colors of Vorarlberg are red and white." The first paragraph of Section 8 of the Law on National Symbols further specifies: "The colors of the country are red and white. They form the national flag, which consists of two horizontal stripes of equal width, the upper one being red and the lower one white."
The Vorarlberg state flag is identical to that of two other countries, Vienna and Salzburg . In those of Tyrol and Upper Austria, the color relationships are reversed.
State service flag
In order to classify them as such, but also to avoid confusion, the state authorities use the so-called state service flag , which differs from the state flag in that it bears the Vorarlberg state coat of arms in the middle . The national colors are also mentioned in the second stanza of the Vorarlberg national anthem where it says about Vorarlberg:
- "Here you stay true to your home country and it blows red and white in the air."
Conflicts
Due to the relatively strong local patriotism in Vorarlberg , the state flag is often used more often than the national flag , and the Austrian Lake Constance ships also carry the state flag on the bow mast. Sometimes there is direct competition between the state and national flags. During the rally for the christening of the ship "Vorarlberg", the Austrian flag was torn down and replaced by the national flag. In order to make it possible to distinguish between the state flags of Salzburg and Vienna, the state service flag is also often used in private use; this is permissible as long as it does not simulate public authorization.
