history

Coat of arms of Vorarlberg until 1918

Seals have been used to authenticate documents in general since the high Middle Ages .
For a long time, the Vorarlberg stands did not have their own seal. The three dominant cities of Bregenz , Feldkirch and Bludenz attached their seals to the documents. Later, in 1762, these three municipal seals were drawn together to form the seal of the Vorarlberg estates for technical reasons. In 1849 Vorarlberg was united with Tyrol and was only recognized as a separate state in an administrative unit with the "prince-duchy of Tyrol" through the February patent in 1861. Until 1918, the state seal showed the state coat of arms awarded by Emperor Franz Josef in 1863.
With the design of a state seal, a proposal for a state coat of arms was submitted to the emperor. This was approved and since 1918/19 the state seal has shown the new state coat of arms.
In 1969 it was enshrined in law as a national symbol and in 1984 corresponding regulations were added to the national constitution .
