The parish church of St. Leopold is a Roman Catholic branch church of the provost parish of the cathedral in Wiener Neustadt at Wiener Straße 61. Originally a Jesuit church until the abolition of the Jesuit order in 1773. The church is called Vorstadtkirche because it stood in front of the former Vienna gate of the former city wall and was placed as a point de vue in the axis of Wiener Straße, which since then has made a kink in front of the church forecourt, which in the extension shows the remains of a Roman street towards Vienna.

Building description and history

The Jesuit church as a north-facing hall was built from 1737 to 1743 in front of the city with a Jesuit college parallel to the east as a late Baroque complex, with both objects being connected by an upper floor corridor. To the west of the church was a formerly baroque college garden. The construction was financed by the will of the Field Marshal Lieutenant Franz Leopold von Zungaberg, who died in 1735. The consecration of the church took place in 1745. After the abolition of the Jesuit order in 1773, the church was elevated to the town parish church in 1791. The former Jesuit college, which is structurally connected to the church, became the Salzamt in 1773, was a military hospital from 1783 to 1903, with the church serving as a hospital church, and was the Wiener Neustadt City Museum from 1904 to 1990 , and has been the Wiener Neustadt City Archives since 1992 .

The square hall church with two transversely oval square vaulted yokes is presented to the south by a vestibule with ancillary rooms with a retracted gallery with the upper floor corridor to the former Jesuit college and the tower with the main facade to Wiener Straße and ends to the north with a square choir.

Since 1984 the clubhouse of the Catholic-Austrian student union Babenberg zu Wiener Neustadt , which is a member of the middle school cartel association, has been located in the basement of the church .

Southwest of the church is the former benefit house as a two-storey baroque building, which forms the church forecourt with the neighboring house at number 59. A baroque crucifixion group is a small memorial on the church forecourt. Behind it are uncovered remains of a Roman road.

To the north of the church is the historic laundry pond on the Polierbach , a derivative of the Kehrbach , which flows into the former Krupp'sche Löffelfabrik , now the church school Santa Christiana, and flows off into the Warme Fischa .
