Connection to the sea |
The Lake Voulismeni ( Greek λίμνη Βουλισμένη ( .. F sg )) is a round-shaped former fresh water - Lake in the town of Agios Nikolaos on the Greek island of Crete . In 1870 it was connected to the city's seaport by a canal.
According to mythology , the goddess Athena is said to have taken a bath in the lake. Another legend says that the lake is bottomless and connected to the island of Santorini hundreds of kilometers away . This story is based, among other things, on the fact that an earthquake on Santorini in 1956 also shook the surface of Lake Voulismeni. In fact, the lake has a considerable depth of 65 m and therefore drops sharply at the shore with a maximum diameter of 137 m.
In the Second World War , it is reported, the German occupation forces sank weapons, vehicles and other equipment in the lake before they withdrew. Nowadays, the lake is surrounded by a long promenade with numerous taverns and bars and is also a popular destination for the city's population for the Orthodox Easter festival .
