Vineyards on Vis

The Vugava is a white grape that in Central and South Dalmatia is approved as Qualitätsrebe, but in larger quantities only on the island of Vis is cultivated. The vine, for which the names Bugava , Ugava , Viskulja and Vugava bijela are also used, was until recently considered a close relative of Viogniers , but this view is now disproved by comparing the DNA profiles of the two vines. It is a very old grape variety that may have come to this area with the Greeks around 2000 years ago. Overall, however, the origin of this vine, as well as that of other local grape varieties in this region, is unknown.

The cultivation of this early ripening variety is complex, as the very thin-skinned berries are very susceptible to powdery mildew and black spot disease . They are a little more resistant to botrytis .

The Vugava is usually blended with other, more acidic varieties as a supplier of sweetness and alcohol; In white Prošeks , the musts of these grapes are responsible for the sugar and alcohol content. Expanded according to the variety, it delivers very aromatic, alcoholic, but low-acid wines, which are often characterized by a pronounced apricot aroma. As a bottle wine, Vugava dominated wines are often slightly oxidized and can be reminiscent of a dry sherry of the Oloroso type .
