The Vulkan was a German steamship that was used in East Africa during the Arab uprising of 1888.

history

The Vulkan was built in 1872 and was initially used by the Stehr shipping company in Hamburg. In 1884 she came to the Vulkan tugboat company in Hamburg and then to the Franz Schwalbe shipping company, also based in Hamburg. In March 1889 the Reich government bought the Vulkan from the shipping company Schwalbe for use against the Arab uprising in East Africa. On June 22, 1889, the ship reached Zanzibar for use in the Wissmann fleet.

The Wissmann fleet, named after the Reich Commissioner Hermann von Wissmann , who was responsible for suppressing the uprising, was responsible for landing and supplying the German troops on the East African coast, while the Imperial Navy provided the blockade squadron, which together with British and Italian warships secured the East African coast against the smuggling of slaves of the Arabs from Africa and against the importation of weapons into East Africa for the troops of the Arabs. The tasks of the Wissmann fleet and the blockade squadron, however, mixed in the course of the uprising.

As part of the volcano's mission , the ship stranded off Pangani on July 13, 1889 and ended up as a total loss.
