The Vulkan Trophy has been a 24-hour long-distance race that has been held in Herbstein - Altenschlirf in the Vogelsberg district since 2007 , in which only vintage tractors can participate. It is the first and so far only race of this kind in Germany. The idea for this comes from Austria, where there have been tractor races for a long time. The race takes place in early July. The oldest participating tractor so far was a Deutz F1L514 / 51 from 1952. The race is organized by the Oldtimer Tractors Racing Club Vogelsberg .

The name Vulkan Trophy is another name for the trophy awarded by various clubs. The Vogelsberger tractor association z. B. awards a basalt trophy.

route

The circuit of the Vulkan Trophy route is around 4.5 km long. 60% of the route consists of gravel and meadow paths, the rest of the route is paved.

Attendees

The tractors must be built in 1975 or earlier. In order to be able to take part in the 24-hour race, at least two drivers with a corresponding driver's license must be registered; a maximum of four drivers are permitted for each tractor in the 24 hours. The minimum age of the driver is 16 years. Helmets and seat belts are mandatory for drivers. A roll bar on the vehicle and z. B. standard tractor drawbars front and rear. The vehicles are divided into different classes. The individual maximum speeds depend on this classification. For example, a class 1A tractor (1–15 hp as standard) may reach a maximum of 30 km / h, while there is a limit of 70 km / h for all B vehicles (close to series production or self-made) with all-wheel brakes.

Already in the first race in 2007, 27 teams, including one from Austria, took part. In 2008 there were already 37 participants, although the 2007 winning team was unable to take part due to a tractor accident. In 2009 there were 44 participants at the start. There was a spectacular tractor rollover. Thanks to the safety cage, the driver was uninjured. The tractor was back in the race after a little over 5 hours with a new front axle. In 2010 the race was characterized by dry weather and dust. The visibility on the route was sometimes less than 50 meters. A tractor came off the track in the area of the home straight and crashed into the spectator area. The driver and a helper were slightly injured. The organizers immediately expanded the security area by erecting a second barrier.

Since the competition is about European and World Championships, drivers from all over the world are of course allowed to take part, but so far only drivers from Austria and Germany are at the start, as this sport is not very well known in other countries. A team from Africa was registered for 2013, but could not start because the tractor was too wide.
