Vulvectomy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The vulvectomy is a surgical procedure ( ectomy ) in which a partial or complete surgical removal of the large and small labia and other parts of the external primary sex of the woman (the vulva ) is carried out. The removal of the clitoris , also part of the vulva, is called a clitoridectomy .

In addition to the vulvectomy with medical indication, a corresponding procedure can be carried out for cultural reasons ( circumcision of female genitals , genital mutilation) or for aesthetic reasons ( labioplasty ).

Medical indication

Vulvectomy is performed for vulvar cancer and advanced vulvar dystrophy in older patients. This usually results in a radical removal, in which the lymph nodes in the groin area (inguinal lymph nodes) and the pelvis (pelvic lymph nodes) are usually removed ( lymphadenectomy ). A partial vulvectomy can be performed for vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia .
