VxWorks is a proprietary real-time operating system developed by Wind River Systems . It is mainly used in certain small appliances . Typical areas of application include e.g. B. aerospace and defense, as well as machine controls, medical devices and network infrastructure. It was also used by Canon for digital cameras, but has been replaced by the in-house development DRYOS since 2007 .

In IT, Fujitsu Technology Solutions uses VxWorks as the basis for the operating system of its ETERNUS DX storage systems.

Industrial robot systems from KUKA AG use VxWorks as well as classic Windows. This combination is called "VxWin" by the manufacturer.

The development of programs for VxWorks takes place on a more powerful host computer such as a PC or a workstation . These generate special program versions for the type of small device required. Target platforms with different processors are available.

VxWorks was used on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and Pathfinder missions to Mars. The Mars vehicles Spirit , Opportunity and Curiosity are controlled by computers that also run under VxWorks.
