Vytautas Petrulis (born February 3, 1890 in Katelišės, Panevėžys district , † 1942 in Uchta , Russia ) was a Lithuanian politician and prime minister .

Life

Minister of Finance and introduction of the local currency litas

After finishing school and studying, he worked as an accountant . In 1920 he became the founding director of the Commercial and Industrial Bank (Prekybos ir pramonės banko) of Klaipėda .

His political career began in the summer of 1918 when the Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party ( Lietuvių krikščionių democ partija ) became a member of the Lithuanian State Council ( Lietuvos Valstybės Taryba ). Prime Minister Pranas Dovydaitis appointed him acting Finance Minister on March 12, 1919 . However, he only held this office until April 12, 1919.

On August 22, 1922, Prime Minister Ernestas Galvanauskas appointed him Minister of Finance, Trade and Industry . He held these offices until June 28, 1923. Shortly before the beginning of his term in office, a separate national currency was introduced in June 1922 , the litas , which replaced the Deutsche Ostmark , which the Germans had introduced during the First World War . Yet Petrulis was often referred to as the father of the litas.

In May 1923 and May 1926 he was elected member of parliament ( Seimas ), where he represented the Christian Democratic Party Lietuvos Ukininku Sajunga as chairman . On June 28, 1923, he was appointed Minister of Finance by Galvanauskas and held this post in the subsequent cabinet of Antanas Tumėna until February 4, 1925.

Prime Minister 1925

On February 4, 1925, he was finally appointed Prime Minister himself as the successor to Tumėnas . At the same time he took over the office of finance minister in his government, which was in office until September 25, 1925. Successor as Prime Minister was the former Minister of Education Leonas Bistras . From September 1925 to March 1926 he was the successor to Bistras President of the Second Seimas .

Subsequently, he largely withdrew from politics. In 1937 he finally became director of a foreign trade company. After the occupation of Lithuania by the Red Army , he was arrested on July 11, 1940. In 1942 he was executed by shooting near Ukhta .
