A clothes horse (also called a clothes dryer ) is a device for hanging up washed laundry to dry .

The clothes horse can be made of metal , plastic or (nowadays less often) wood . To hang up the damp laundry, either parallel wires or lines are stretched out or round wood is attached to it.

Due to their usually compact design, clothes horse can also be used in buildings. After the laundry is dry, the clothes horse can be folded up and stowed away to save space.

If the laundry is dried in living rooms, the air humidity must be removed by increased ventilation in order to avoid damage from moisture penetration. A relatively large amount of heating energy is lost in heated rooms.

In Germany tenants are allowed to dry laundry in the apartment. This is part of the core area of rental use. If the drying of the laundry in the apartment is prohibited, the landlord must offer an alternative way of drying the laundry.
