Wörther Schlossbitter is a German bitters or semi- bitters with around 30% alcohol by volume from Wörth on the Danube .

In preparation, sugar syrup is mixed with herbs and spices such as galangal , cinnamon , vanilla and cardamom or ginger and other aromatic ingredients. This mass is filled and stored in oak barrels together with alcohol . After maturing at least quarterly, the liqueur is bottled, has a copper-brown color and a caramel-like to bitter-sweet taste.

The liqueur is only produced in the court pharmacy. Distribution is carried out by Wörther Schlossbitter GmbH .

The recipe was developed by pharmacist August Essenwein in the 1890s . In 1896 he received a gold medal at the international hygiene exhibition in Baden-Baden . Essenwein came to Wörth in 1905 with the recipe for the herbal elixir and produced the castle bitter in the castle pharmacy , which was later renamed the court pharmacy . The liqueur was originally marketed as a "panacea". The advertising text in the pharmacy's Wörther people's calendar in 1912 was: “Wörther Schlossbitter derives its elemental power directly from nature, from exquisite Bavarian forest plants and sun herbs, in which the blessing of heavenly light has conjured up precious, healing substances. Wörther Schlossbitter, the full-bodied power liqueur for the healthy and the sick, has the following effects on the digestive tract: It strongly stimulates the stomach nerves ... drink it for what it is, as a fortifying elixir of life ” .

The effects of the herbal liqueur were also praised by King Carol of Romania and the Princes of Thurn and Taxis . The Wörther pharmacist was appointed purveyor to the court , appointed court pharmacist in 1911 and a patent applied for the liqueur .
