A dice or dice cup is a cup in which at craps, several dice are shaken and then emptied onto the table. It is used to prevent irregularities when rolling the dice.

Material and shape

Dice cups are usually made of leather or plastic. The more elaborately crafted specimens have a so-called lip at the opening, i. H. a bead to ensure that the dice bounce in any case when rolling out.

Dice cups with lips have been handed down from Roman antiquity , specimens with up to three rings of lips have survived.

use

You put the cubes into the cup, shake them and leaves the cube in a usually with green felt being proposed dice board (also Dice tray or dice cup called) roll out. This is intended on the one hand to prevent the dice from rolling away and on the other hand to dampen the noise of the dice.

According to the tournament rules of some games, the cup must be shaken, simply turning the cup inside out is not permitted. The dice must not be touched while rolling, as this could manipulate the throw.

In most dice games, e.g. B. Backgammon , the use of dice cups is mandatory. An exception is the game of craps , in which the dice are traditionally thrown out of hand, but the dice have to be thrown against a wall and rebound from there.

The dice cup is used as a kind of sports device in the dice stacking game of skill .

Cheat

When using a dice cup, it can be ruled out that a cardsharp will artfully lay down the dice - provided that he actually puts all the dice in the cup.

A cardsharp can, for example, in a game with several dice, if he needs a certain number of points on a dice, keep one dice in his hand and only put the others in the cup. In this way, it is possible to discreetly place the dice in the hand with the desired number facing up in the dice cup.

Dice cups offer no protection against marked dice .

Cube tower, cube box and cage cage

The dice tower ( lat. Turricula ) fulfills the same purpose as the dice cup ; with him the dice are thrown in at the top and roll out again over inclined planes or steps in front.

Cube boxes and cages are also to be regarded as special forms of the dice cup ; these are closed, transparent or cage-like containers in which the cubes are locked.

When using a dice box, it is of course not possible for a cardsharp to exchange marked dice during a game - he can, however, place fake dice in the box in advance .

Dice boxes are not only used to avoid fraud, they prove to be very practical when playing on the go, on the beach, etc. Ä.

Cube cages are in casinos in Sic Bo used, which is why this game under the name Bird Cage is known.
