W. John Hutchins

William John Hutchins (* 27. January 1939 in St Pancras , London ) is an English linguist with the main focus Machine Translation .

Life

William John Hutchins was born in London to William Arthur Hutchins (1907–1972) and Frances Helen Read (1913–2001). Hutchins has been married to Hillary Turnell since 1996 and has one son (* 1970).

W. John Hutchins studied German and French at the University of Nottingham and graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts . This was followed by a diploma in librarianship (library science) at University College London from 1960 to 1962 . W. John Hutchins worked from 1962 to 1965 as an assistant librarian at Durham University and from 1965 to 1971 as an assistant librarian at the University of Sheffield . From 1971 to 1980 he was employed by the University of East Anglia as Senior Assistant Librarian, from 1980 to 1998 as Sub-Librarian. In 2000 he obtained a Ph.D. at the University of East Anglia. W. John Hutchins has authored numerous articles and publications on the subject of machine translation since 1963 and published them in various specialist journals.

Awards

W. John Hutchins received the International Association for Machine Translation's Award of Honor in 2001.
