Nellie Clifden was an Irish actress who had an affair with Edward, Prince of Wales . They met in 1861 when Prince Edward was spending ten weeks with the Grenadier Guards at Curragh Camp in Ireland .

When information about the incident reached Prince Edward's parents, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Queen Victoria of England, his father visited him at his place of study in Cambridge . They took a long walk in the rain to discuss the affair. Prince Albert died soon after, and Queen Victoria blamed Prince Edward and the affair for her husband's death.

She said, “He had been killed by that dreadful business.” (He was killed by that dreadful business.)

The relationship between Nellie Clifden and the Prince of Wales ended soon after. In 1863 he married Princess Alexandra of Denmark , but continued to have affairs with other women.
