WCW Gallery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The WCW Gallery was founded in 2007 in the Hamburg district of Wilhelmsburg by Björn Beneditz, Oliver Bulas, Martin M. Blumenthal, Daniel Megerle and Jan-Peter Heusermann. It sees itself explicitly as a non-commercial hybrid of exhibition space, gallery and work of art, but nevertheless finds itself exposed to allegations regarding the forced gentrification of Wilhelmsburg. Daniel Megerle soon resigned because he did not see a suitable field of activity for himself as a painter in this exhibition company.

Since it was founded, the WCW Gallery has presented exhibitions by national and international artist friends, including Tobias Kasper, Roman Schramm, Jonathan Monk , Andrea Winkler, Christian Rothmaler, the artist group Jochen Schmith and Stefano Calligaro.

Some of the artists presented by the WCW Gallery have their roots in the German music scene. These include Jan Müller , bassist in the band Tocotronic , with the project artist group in the name of the people (KiNdV), Henning Besser von Deichkind and Christian Naujoks.

In November 2008, the WCW Gallery was the only exhibition space to be invited to the We call it Hamburg art festival , curated by Yilmaz Dziewior , director of the Hamburger Kunstverein at the time.
