WIND (severe weather warning system)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WIND ( English W eather In formation on D emand , dt .: "weather information on demand") is a private information service in Germany, locally and individually before severe weather warning. The mobile service via app is free of charge for customers of the Bavarian Insurance Chamber or other public insurers. The previous WIND app has been replaced by the "MehrWetter-App".

The severe weather warning system WIND was developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and System Technology ISST in cooperation with the weather service company Meteomedia on behalf of the Bavarian Insurance Chamber . The warning system is operated by public insurers in cooperation with Fraunhofer FOKUS (from 2012, previously with Fraunhofer ISST) in Germany. The severe weather information that is processed by the system comes from Meteomedia GmbH in Germany and is also distributed on the portal of the severe weather center . The warning system is only available to customers of public insurers and has almost 600,000 registered customers (as of 2013).

Similar warning systems, which were developed on the basis of WIND, are operated and offered in other European countries (e.g. by Uniqa in cooperation with UBIMET ).

functionality

The severe weather warning system is a typical event notification system: When a severe weather warning is issued by the severe weather center, the warning system receives this warning as a message and only distributes it to the customers concerned. In addition, depending on the customer concerned and the type and severity of the storm, additional information such as possible effects and behavior patterns to be observed are added individually.

A particular strength lies in the processing of short-term forecasts for severe thunderstorms. Here, the individual entry time and the individual effects are calculated very precisely on the basis of geographic coordinates and sent to the customer as information.

WIND users can configure the system online according to their wishes and, for example, determine the warning location (district, postcode or geo-coordinate) and the information path (SMS, e-mail or fax) themselves. With timely warnings, WIND enables you to take protective measures against storms and thus avoid personal injury and property damage.

Further development of WIND-mobile

With WIND-mobile, customers of public insurance companies throughout Germany have had access to a further technical development of WIND as an iPhone app since 2010. It enables the reception of warnings directly on the iPhone and displays them there. A map of the area on the display shows the respective location, so that the user has a precise overview of the storm situation on site and can adjust to it in good time. When displaying short-term thunderstorm warnings, WIND-mobile also shows the movement and the exact extent of the storm area.
