history

The company was founded in September 2004 as a start-up by Michael Fassnauer and Manfred Spatzierer under the name meteomedia gmbh as a subsidiary of the Meteomedia Group in Vienna . The aim of the company founders was to significantly improve the weather forecasts in Austria and to break the existing oligopoly of the state weather services ( ZAMG , Austro Control ).

One year after the company was founded, Die Presse , ÖBB and Uniqa Insurance Group were won as customers, and a separate forecast center for extreme weather events - the Austrian Severe Weather Center - was set up. The severe weather center supplies 2,000,000 customers in Central Europe (as of summer 2013) with severe weather warnings through cooperation with insurance companies. From January 2009 the service was also offered in several countries in Eastern and Southeastern Europe .

In December 2008, the shares in the Meteomedia group were bought back by the company's founders. With the repurchase of the shares, the name was changed from meteomedia gmbh to UBIMET GmbH, where UBIMET stands for "Institute for UBIquitary (ubiquitous) METeorology". UBIMET is headquartered in Vienna .

In addition to the Austrian market, UBIMET also serves customers in Eastern and Central Europe and Australia. The company provides weather forecasts in newspapers , on the radio , on the Internet and as wireless data services on cell phones . The latter includes severe weather warnings in seven languages. The largest customer groups are the infrastructure sector , authorities and the insurance sector .

The Red Bull Group has held a 50 percent share in the company since 2012 .

In 2013 the first meteorological office outside Europe was opened in Melbourne , Australia .

The two-man company has become one of the largest and fastest growing private providers of meteorological services. Through its co-partner Red Bull , UBIMET was part of a global network comprising 160 countries until the end of 2018. In November 2018, Red Bull was removed from the company register as a partner.

In 2014, UBIMET signed a multi-year contract with the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) and will provide the weather forecasts for Formula 1 starting with the 2014 season .

In July 2015, UBIMET published the global weather app MORECAST for the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

technology

UBIMET's quality is based on the quantity and quality of the observation data, the team of meteorologists, computer scientists, physicists, biologists and geographers, a research and development department and our own forecasting algorithms. These make it possible to include a large number of data sources in the modeling and to create precise and individually tailored weather forecasts for communities, authorities, companies and private customers in real time . Separate models have been developed for the exact local and regional forecasts (UBIMET-RACE model), in which, for example, the respective topography of the region is taken into account. In this way, precise data is determined in the event of differences in altitude and severe weather warnings can be issued.

In the research and development department, the weather models and forecasts are further developed in cooperation with international research institutions . For this reason , EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes , who is responsible for digitization, named UBIMET as a model for Europe's Internet future.

The service warns two million private customers via push message, SMS, email or fax of storms / hurricanes , heavy rain , hail , thunderstorms , heavy snowfall or freezing rain .
