history
16th century to 1945
In the early 16th century, the construction of fortifications around Gdansk began. The Elisabeth Bastion was built around 1554.
Around 1890/95 the fortifications were demolished and the streets Dominikswall and Elisabethwall built. Business enterprises, societies, associations, consulates, hotels, shops and apartments settled in the ornate buildings. The luxury hotel Danziger Hof was built in 1898 , and a monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I was erected in 1903 .
In 1945 most of the buildings were destroyed.
After 1945
After 1945 some new buildings were built and the road was expanded into an expressway. In 1971 a tunnel was built. In 2007, extensive repair work was carried out on the road surface, the tram route as well as cycle and pedestrian paths.
