Vaud Military Museum, Morges
The Vaud Military Museum Morges (French: Musée militaire vaudois, Morges) in Morges in Switzerland houses various collections of historical interest, including an impressive collection of artillery pieces from Swiss military history from the time of the Burgundian Wars to the Second World War.
history
The Château de Morges was built between 1286 and 1296 to protect the city of Morges, founded in the same years by the Counts of the House of Savoy , by the builder Huet de Morges as a typical Carré Savoyard with a donjon and three smaller towers at each corner. After the Bernese took over the Vaud, it became the seat of the Bernervögte, after 1803 it became the cantonal armory and in 1925, after the armory was moved to an annex, it became the Vaud military museum .
The collections
The castle currently houses four collections, a historical edged weapon and handgun, a collection of guns, a collection of miniature battle representations and, since 2006, the collection of the Vaudois canton police. A memorial room for the pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski, who used to live in Tolochenaz near Morges, is in preparation for 2015 . An extensive library on weapons and their history is not open to the public, but it can be consulted for study purposes on request.
Historical weapons
The collection includes Swiss and foreign polearms, armor, edged weapons, firearms, uniforms, weapons from the possession of Napoleon Bonaparte and other military equipment up to modern times. Temporary exhibitions on weapons and war events are also organized regularly.
Guns
A tour on the ground floor of the fortress shows the development of the artillery from the guns used in the Burgundy Wars to the cannons used by the Swiss Army in World War II. A bullet mortar used in fortresses and a 1 inch (2.54 cm) Gatling bolt-action gun manufactured by Colt are of interest . There are also directional instruments, a Baranoff apparatus for analogue shooting and various showcases with gun grenades.
Collection of the Vaud Canton Police
In addition to old radars, a replica cell, office equipment and various police weapons, the three motorcycles on display deserve particular interest.
Miniature battle representations
Various depictions of battles from Roman times to Napoleon's time are shown in a darkened room.
Ignacy Jan Paderewski room
Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1869–1941) was a Polish pianist, composer and politician. From 1896 to 1902 he lived in the Villa Riond-Bosson in Tolochenaz near Morges.
