The juniper miner moth ( Argyresthia trifasciata ), sometimes also spelled as juniper miner moth , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of web and bud moths (Yponomeutidae).

description

This very small butterfly reaches a wingspan of seven to ten millimeters. The moth has shiny golden-brown fore wings and 3 silver-white cross bars.

Flight time

The species flies from May to June, about 4 weeks earlier than that of the related species, the Thujamin moth , and is attracted to light.

Way of life

The green colored caterpillars of juniper leaf miner eat among other things, juniper ( Juniperus spp. ), Leyland Cypress ( Cupressus × leylandii ), arborvitae ( Thuja spp. ) And cypresses ( Chamaecyparis sp. ). In contrast to the related species of the Thujaminiermotte mines the juniper moth in four to seven shoot tips; the corridors are up to 3 cm long. In autumn, the caterpillars migrate inside the bush, where they form a cocoon under the protection of the bark scales, in which they pupate in spring after overwintering.

Harmful effect

The shoot tips of the forage plants are mined by the caterpillars, then turn brown and die. Compared to the Thujamin moth, the harmful effect is much greater, as the larva attacks several shoot tips one after the other.

Combat

You can spray with approved insecticides at the time of the butterfly flight. The pruning of infected shoot tips is only successful in summer and autumn.
