Wadim Genrichowitsch Knischnik ( Russian Вадим Генрихович Книжник , English transliteration Vadim Genrikhovich Knizhnik; born February 20, 1962 in Kiev , †  December 25, 1987 in Moscow ) was a Russian theoretical physicist.

Knischnik won the Physics Olympiad of the USSR twice as a student, studied at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology from 1978 to 1984 and received his doctorate (Russian doctorate) at the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics under Alexander Polyakov (Polyakov ). In 1986 he joined the Landau Institute, but was also at ITEP . He placed his first publication as a student together with his professor Alexander Fjodorowitsch Andrejew . At the Landau Institute he mainly dealt with quantum field theory and especially string theory and quantum gravity. His career as a promising mathematical physicist in the field of string theory was broken off by his untimely death at the age of only 25.

Knischnik examined loop diagrams of the perturbation series in string theory, using methods of modern algebraic geometry. The KZ equations are named after him and Alexander Zamolodchikov , complex partial differential equations of the first order to which the correlation functions from conforming field theories to affine Lie algebras obey.
