The gun run is a Swiss variant of running in which the participants wear a camouflage suit and a pack (marching bag) including a rifle .

History of the gun barrel

The first Swiss gun run took place in 1916, during the First World War , with the 1st Swiss Army baggage march in Zurich . This was organized by the then still multi-sports FC Zurich .

In 1934 the first Frauenfeld military competition was held. The Frauenfelder (marathon distance) is nowadays the king's run of gun runs.

A gun barrel boom arose in the 1940s and 1950s, and many gun barrels were founded during this time. Until the end of the 1980s, the gun runs were the popular runs in Switzerland, with up to 9,000 runners starting there every year. The gun barrel was given a broad presence in the media

In the 2000s, interest in gun barrels declined significantly. Due to the lack of interest on the part of top runners, the events have turned towards popular sports and the times that have run have deteriorated. Several gun runs ( Freiburg , Toggenburg , Kriens and Neuchâtel gun runs) were discontinued, the Frauenfeld was also open to marathon and half-marathon runners. In 2006, the gun race championship , which was launched in 1967, was held for the last time, and the umbrella association responsible for the Swiss Weapons Race (IGWS) dissolved at the end of the same year.

equipment

According to the rules of the Frauenfeld march (valid since 2012):

  • Clothing: The run is in camouflage suit 90 , which is also loaned to the civilian participants. The older, rust-red camouflage suits are not infrequently seen. Foreign members of the army run in camouflage suits of their army. The hat of camouflage suit 90 is permitted for headgear. Field gray to black hats without shag and without advertising are also allowed. The blouse must be closed during the run.
  • The pack consists of the combat backpack 90 with the assault rifle 90 . For men, the pack weighs at least 6.2 kg, for women at least 5 kg. The rifle is optional for women. Older military backpacks with an assault rifle 57 or a carbine 31 can also be carried. The barrel of the weapon must always be visible. The pack can also be loaned to civilian runners.
  • There are no regulations for shoes; Running shoes are therefore allowed. However, spikes and similar aids are prohibited .
