The Orphan Green was a festival held annually in Hamburg between 1633 and 1876 .

history

The Volksfest Waisengrün was held annually on the first Thursday in July between 1633 and 1876. First, orphans , accompanied by musicians, went through the city to collect donations for the orphanage from the audience . Then a party was celebrated in front of the stone gate . The last orphan green took place on July 6, 1876.

Heinrich Heine describes his impressions of the festival in the poem Memory of Hammonia .
