The Freilil power plant ( Portuguese Barragem de Freilil ) is a run-of-river power plant on the Cabrum River , a left (southern) tributary of the Douro . It is located in the northern region of Portugal in the Viseu district . The small town of Cinfães is about five kilometers west of the power plant. The Cabrum flows into the Douro about two kilometers downstream from the dam.

The project started in 1925. The dam wall that exists today was completed in 1955. In 1926 the first power plant with an output of 0.225  MW went into operation. Today's power plant went online in 1988. In 1998 it was renovated. It is owned by HDN, Energia do Norte, SA .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete dam wall with a height of 17 m above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at a height of 319.7 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 73 (or 61.4 or 61) m and its width 1.6 m.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 400 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief. The design flood is 400 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 317 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.033 km² and holds 0.14 (or 0.1) million m³ of water - 0.138 (or 0.13) million m³ of this can be used to generate electricity become.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 4.6  MW, the Freilil power plant is one of the smaller hydropower plants in Portugal . The average annual production is 10.3 million kWh . It is operated by EDP.

The water is led from the dam wall through a 600 m long canal to the storage basin of the power plant. From there it reaches the machine house via a 255 m long pressure pipe .

The Francis turbine has a maximum output of 4.6 MW, while the generator has an output of 5  MVA . The rated speed of the turbine is 750 rpm. The generator has a nominal voltage of 6  kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 6 kV is increased to 15 kV by means of a power transformer.

The maximum height of fall is 127 m. The maximum flow rate is 4 m³ / s.
