2017 Southern California wildfires
The 2017 forest fires in California were the largest in the state's history. More than 104,607 residents had to be evacuated. More than 1063 structures were destroyed, 280 others damaged. Until 22 December to fight the fires were at least 177 million US dollars spent. More than 8,500 firefighters were on duty.
At its peak, the fires were so severe that they affected the weather and triggered a firestorm .
The most important factor in the spread was the unusually strong Santa Ana winds .

The fire broke out in Santa Paula on December 4, 2017 . It moved rapidly towards Ventura and destroyed more than 500 homes that night. It ate its way through the Santa Ynez Mountains , expanded into the Los Padres National Forest , and reached Santa Barbara County . On December 14th, a firefighter died while extinguishing the fire near Fillmore .
