Waldemar Magnusson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Waldemar Magnusson (* around 1285 ; † February 16, 1318 in Nyköpingshus ) was a Swedish prince and duke of Finland . He was the youngest son of Magnus Ladulås and his wife Hedwig von Holstein and brother of the future King Birger Magnusson and Erik Magnusson .

Life

On the occasion of his brother Birger's coronation as King of Sweden in 1302, he was married to the daughter of the imperial ruler Torgils Knutsson Kristina. This marriage was divorced in 1305, as Waldemar could not continue the marriage due to the spiritual relationship with Kristina because Knutsson was his godfather. In autumn 1312 Waldemar married Ingebjørg Eriksdatter , the daughter of Erik II of Norway . After he and his brother Erik had squeezed large parts of the Swedish Empire from King Birger in 1315, Waldemar received most of Finland, the Stockholm Palace together with most of Upplands, as well as Borgholm and Öland Castle . During his reign as Duke of Finland, Turku Castle was expanded from a fort to a castle. During the Christmas party in 1317 at Nyköpingshus Castle, Birger took revenge on his two younger brothers and had them captured. A few months later, Erik and Waldemar died in captivity on Nyköpingshus.

The marriage to Ingeborg had a son, Erik (* 1316), who apparently died young. He may have had more children, because letters from 1344 and 1345 speak of their inheritance after their children (“liberi”, “filii”).
