The Waldensian Church ( Chiesa Evangelica Valdese di Verona ) is a historic building in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Verona old town . It is located at the confluence of via Pigna with via Duomo .
Patronage
The church building looks back on a great age and was originally dedicated to Santa Maria Consolatrice . This is a local saint of the city of Verona, who is considered the sister of the Holy Bishop of Verona (8th century).
Roman Catholic Parish Church
The current building contains Romanesque structures from the 12th century. In 1320, Bishop Tebaldo of Verona deposited the bones of Mary in the church, who had died as a consecrated virgin with a reputation for holiness.
The church was profaned during the Napoleonic occupation. The relics were transferred to the cathedral . They were deposited there in the Cappella Mazzanti, where they are to this day.
Waldensian Church
The church building remained unused for decades until it was bought by the congregation of the Evangelical Waldensian Church in 1879 and inaugurated with a service on January 6, 1880 after restoration. For the Waldensians, this meant a return to the city, where the centuries-long persecution of their religious community began with the Council of Verona .
