The United Nations Forum on Forests ( English United Nations Forum on Forests , UNFF ) is an in October 2000 by ECOSOC, the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations founded and subordinate to him body with the objective, principles of sustainable forest management to work on a global scale .

development

With its aim, UNFF is following the Rio Declaration adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio in 1992, the Forest Principles also adopted there, Chapter 11 of Agenda 21 on combating deforestation and the results of its predecessor organizations, the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests (IPF) and the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests (IFF) . Between 1995 and 2000 they maintained the worldwide forest dialogue and in the end achieved the elaboration of 270 political proposals, the so-called IPF / IFF Proposals for Action, for the management, conservation and sustainable use of all types of forests.

At its sixth meeting from February 13 to 24, 2006 in New York , the delegates were unable to agree on a conclusion to the Forest Forum, which was originally set up only until 2005. In 2005, the negotiations failed mainly because of the question of whether a global agreement on the protection of global forests should be legally binding or non-binding. This question could not be finally clarified in 2006 either, even if a binding international treaty had become very unlikely, mainly due to the opposition of Brazil .

At the seventh meeting (UNFF-7) from April 16 to 24, 2007, a legally non-binding agreement was reached. At the same time, a multi-year work program was decided (MYPOW - Multi-Year Program of Work), within the framework of which the achievement of the four main objectives of the non-binding agreement and its implementation should be guaranteed. To this end, meetings UNFF-8 to UNFF-11 are to take place by 2015.

structure

The UNFF is a permanent institution. Therefore a secretariat is maintained in New York for the forum.

All states that have forests on their territory are involved in the process. In its capacity as a dialogue with all participating groups in society, many stakeholders participate, who are organized in eight major groups.
