The Waldfriedhof Pechau is a municipal cemetery in the city of Magdeburg .

location

The cemetery is in the immediate vicinity of the village of Pechau , which was incorporated into Magdeburg in 1994 , west of Calenberger Strasse , which connects Pechau with Prester . However, the cemetery grounds are outside the Pechau district in the Kreuzhorst area . The district boundary runs directly in front of the cemetery entrance. The area around the cemetery is shaped by the forest of the Kreuzhorst, from which the name as a forest cemetery is derived. The main access road to the Kreuzhorst nature reserve runs east of the cemetery. The cemetery covers an area of 0.58 hectares and has a cemetery chapel that can accommodate 40 guests.

history

The churchyard around the Sankt-Thomas-Kirche in the village served as the original cemetery of the community of Pechau . After the churchyard was fully occupied in 1962, the forest cemetery was laid out southwest of the locality on a field on the edge of the Kreuzhorst. It is the youngest cemetery in Magdeburg (as of 2011). Since 1997, the cemetery has been under the authority of the city of Magdeburg. It is run by the city's own Stadtgarten und Friedhöfe Magdeburg .

A geological report prepared for the cemetery described the conditions as favorable, as rapid decomposition was guaranteed due to the sand layers present at a depth of around 1.80 / 2.00 meters. At the same time, the direction of flow of the groundwater in the direction of the Alte Elbe, a little further to the west, would prevent groundwater contamination.

In the cemetery there are row graves and elective graves for both burial and urn burial.
