The Waldhotel "Liechtensteiner Hof" was a hotel in the Liechtenstein capital Vaduz , which was built in 1931/1932 according to plans by the Munich architect Gustav Ludwig (1876–1952) and demolished in 1974. At the time of its construction it was the first luxury hotel in the country and was considered a prototype of modern hotel construction in Liechtenstein.

history

The Waldhotel “Liechtensteiner Hof” was commissioned by the Prague investor Emanuel Epstein on Fürst-Johannes-Strasse above the Vaduz villa district “Ebaholz” at an altitude of 560 m above sea level. M. built. The architect Gustav Ludwig commissioned his young German colleague Erwin Hinderer , who settled in Schaan on the occasion of this contract and opened an architecture office there, with the construction management of the project. The rectangular hotel building had four floors under a flat hipped roof . The windows and balconies were set at regular intervals. A casino and extensive gardens with a large outdoor swimming pool were attached to the main building.

In the spring of 1933, the German theater entrepreneurs Alfred and Fritz Rotter lived in the hotel for several months ; During a trip to the Gaflei , they were victims of a pogrom in which Alfred Rotter and his wife Gertrud were killed. In 1933 the hotel was auctioned and came into the possession of master builder Ludwig Ospelt (1882–1949) and master locksmith Gustav Ospelt (1906–1990) from Vaduz. Ludwig Ospelt was also the host of the hotel in the following period; Gustav Ospelt was only co-owner until 1939.

The hotel's leisure facility with the swimming pool was a special attraction and made the hotel a popular destination for guests from the wider area, especially from Switzerland, but also for the residents of the neighboring villa district. In the years 1936, 1938 and from 1953 to 1954 the hotel was rebuilt and expanded several times. The imposing building was also the venue for a wide variety of social events such as entertainment and dance evenings, the trophy show of the Liechtenstein hunters or cabaret performances. In March 1957 the founding meeting of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (VDMFK) took place in the Waldhotel “Liechtensteiner Hof” with 16 members .

After the era of long-time hotel director Anton Ospelt, the hotel business was temporarily suspended at the end of the 1960s; Later the hotelier Peter Prasch took over the house and ran a beer bar with a beer garden on the lower floor.

The architecturally remarkable building was demolished in 1974 because it was (wrongly) believed to be dilapidated, and the swimming pool was filled in. The municipality of Vaduz was able to acquire the property in an auction in 1979. Today there is a barbecue area and the "Waldhotel Family Park", in which several plaques commemorate the former Waldhotel.
