Waldsassengau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Waldsassengau ( Waltsazigowe ) was an East Franconian district in the early Middle Ages . The area comprised the dry high-lying areas from the eastern half of the Spessart (eastern part) to the area between Mainviereck and Maindreieck . Today the Waldsassengau gives its name to the Alliance Waldsassengau , an amalgamation of 13 communities in the western district of Würzburg .

etymology

The Waldsassengau or Waltsazi Gau is named after the so-called Waldsassen or Waldseißen - d. H. residents in the forest - who settled in the densely forested area west of Würzburg towards the beginning of the Middle Ages. Before that, reclamation had been refrained from for a long time due to the forest and settlements emerged mainly in valleys in the few clear areas.
