The Waldsee is an isolated area in the water district Hermsdorf of Berlin district Reinickendorf with an area of 2.5  hectares .

The originally Ice Age pond was formerly also called Sandsee . In 1906, the "Hermsdorfer Boden-Aktiengesellschaft" acquired properties from the heirs of the Hermsdorfer manor owner Ludwig Lessing , after whom the water area was sometimes also called Lessingsee . In the period that followed (1908–1914), the construction company created the so-called “Waldseeviertel” by managing the streets and the architectural design of the country houses. A development plan from 1911 gave priority to artistic over commercial aspects, for which purpose the forest lake was dredged and surrounded by a park (Lessingpark) in order to arouse the interest of plot buyers with the ensemble of park and lake. For this purpose, the lake has been enlarged as a planned highlight of the Waldsee district, its banks have been planted with rare trees, of which several bald cypresses have survived, and a rowing boat dock with the so-called "Waldseehalle" has been created. The drinking hall, decorated with fairy tale pictures, was built on the south bank of the lake, where previously there was a small pub. A rain shelter, which has now also been demolished, has been on the site since 1959. The plans of the Hermsdorfer Baugesellschaft to create a new town center with Waldseepark and the adjacent Cecilienplatz, however, were prevented by a lack of cooperation with the neighboring community of Glienicke and probably also the outbreak of the First World War . Near the lake in the direction of Glienicke is the "makeshift home settlement" for Berliners whose apartments were bombed in the air war, which was built after the Second World War . A prominent resident was the writer Erich Kästner , who lived with his then partner and son in a semi-detached house (Parkstrasse 3a) from 1964 to 1966. Today the Waldsee is popular with joggers , walkers and - with its playground - with children.

Ecological situation

An ecological tipping to prevent the lake, it was in the years 2016/2017 up to 2 1 / 2  -foot-thick sediment deposits desilted and pollution loads that pass through the Cecilie ditch and three lines from the rainwater drains into the lake.
