In 1955, as a student of Pawel Sakharov , Ivan Tschekmasow , Pjotr Mituritsch , Andrei Goncharov and Vladimir Faworski, he received his diploma at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute. Between 1954 and 1980 he worked as an illustrator for various publishers.

From 1956 his independent work began and he developed a range of geometric shapes (triangle, circle, drop) during this time and the following years. As a conceptualist he analyzed the composition of the image and emphasized differences and harmonies with his theories (“ Para-Form ”, “ Trinity ”). At the beginning of the 1980s, the subject of “communication” became more and more important to the artist, and he dedicated numerous works and installations to it. Towards the end of the 1980s he discovered the "New Phonetics of Colors".

Between 1994 and 2002, Valery Jurlow lived and worked in New York in a studio made available to him.
